This week, the 2010 Financial Cryptography conference is being held in Tenerife. The papers to be presented are likely of interest to the Finextra audience. Unfortunately, most are not available online, but searching for the title might show up a copy on the authors’ home page.

My paper at FC’10 is on the security of Verified by Visa and MasterCard SecureCode (i.e. the 3-D secure protocol). My co-author, Ross Anderson, wrote:

“Online transactions with credit cards or debit cards are increasingly verified using the 3D Secure system, which is branded as “Verified by VISA” and “MasterCard SecureCode”. This is now the most widely-used single sign-on scheme ever, with over 200 million cardholders registered. It’s getting hard to shop online without being forced to use it.

In a paper I’m presenting today at Financial Cryptography, Steven Murdoch and I analyse 3D Secure. From the engineering point of view, it does just about everything wrong, and it’s becoming a fat target for phishing. So why did it succeed in the marketplace?

Quite simply, it has strong incentives for adoption. Merchants who use it push liability for fraud back to banks, who in turn push it on to cardholders. Properly designed single sign-on systems, like OpenID and InfoCard, can’t offer anything like this. So this is yet another case where security economics trumps security engineering, but in a predatory way that leaves cardholders less secure. We conclude with a suggestion on what bank regulators might do to fix the problem”

Further comments about this paper can be found on Light Blue Touchpaper. Frank Stajano has also blogged about his paper, on using multiple channels to resist relay attacks.

George Hotz, the man responsible for “jailbreaking” the iPhone platform, has released the “coveted” PlayStation 3 exploit he announced last week, the one that means the console is essentially “hacked.”

So begins the cycle of homebrew developers finding new ways to run custom code on the PS3 and Sony Computer Entertainment engineers attempting to squash exploits that enable said homebrew (and the piracy that tends to go along with it). We’re sure that Kevin Butler, VP of Locking Shit Down, is already on the case.

Just don’t count on Hotz continuing his pursuit of keeping the PlayStation 3 hack ready. And don’t expect anything profound to come out of Hotz’s efforts any time soon.

“Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released,” Hotz writes on his blog. “I have a life to get back to and can’t keep working on this all day and night.”

Hotz says his exploit is “known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current versions.”

While there’s still an incredible amount of work for the “scene” to do for PlayStation execs to worry about rampant PS3 piracy, now three-plus years into the console’s lifespan, we’re guessing it won’t take long for something substantive to come out of this effort.

GoogleSharing is a special kind of anonymizing proxy service, designed for a very specific threat. It ultimately aims to provide a level of anonymity that will prevent google from tracking your searches, movements, and what websites you visit. GoogleSharing is not a full proxy service designed to anonymize all your traffic, but rather something designed exclusively for your communication with Google. Our system is totally transparent, with no special “alternative” websites to visit. Your normal work flow should be exactly the same.

A security researcher at Google is recommending computer users make several configuration changes to protect themselves against a previously unknown vulnerability that allows untrusted users to take complete control of systems running most versions of Microsoft Windows.

The vulnerability resides in a feature known as the Virtual DOS Machine, which Microsoft introduced in 1993 with Windows NT, according to this writeup penned by Tavis Ormandy of Google. Using code written for the VDM, an unprivileged user can inject code of his choosing directly into the system’s kernel, making it possible to make changes to highly sensitive parts of the operating system.

“You can in theory write to memory segments that are otherwise considered highly trusted and sensitive,” said Tom Parker, a director in the security consulting services group at Securicon, a Washington, DC-based security practice. “So for example, malware could possibly use it to install a key logger.”

The vulnerability exists in all 32-bit versions of Microsoft OSes released since 1993, and proof-of-concept code works on the XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008, and 7 versions of Windows, Ormandy reported. Presumably, Windows 2000 is also susceptible. Immunity, a Miami-based company that makes auditing software for security professionals, has already added a module exploiting the vulnerability to its product called Canvas. The exploit has been tested on all versions of Windows except for 3.1.

Ormandy said the security hole can easily be closed by turning off the MSDOS and WOWEXEC subsystems. The changes generally don’t interfere with most tasks since they disable rarely-used 16-bit applications. He said he informed Microsoft security employees of the vulnerability in June.

“Regrettably, no official patch is currently available,” he wrote. “As an effective and easy to deploy workaround is available, I have concluded that it is in the best interest of users to go ahead with the publication of this document without an official patch.”

Microsoft security officials – who are already working double-duty responding to a potent Internet Explorer bug used to attack Google – said they are looking in to Ormandy’s advisory and are not aware of attacks that target the reported vulnerability. ®
